Global CCS Experts Gathers in Beijing University Discussing the Future of Carbon Capture in Steel Industry

"Symposium on Climate Change, green growth and CCUS  workshop" was held in Stanford Center at Peking University by Peking University Public Policy Forum International on Nov. 20-21, 2018.

Iron and steel industry is a typical energy-intensive industry. It has a prominent position in major industrial countries and countries and regions with rapid economic development. According to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, "Green Growth" will play an important role in leading economic and social transformation

The symposium invited government officials, industry experts and institutional scholars from all over the world to share knowledge and ideas about CCS to support further policy research and development

The symposium was co-chaired by Pro. Fu Jun of Peking University and BHP Billiton climate change initiative director Graham Winkelman. Sun Zen, the deputy director for Climit department of the Ministry of Ecological Environment, Elizabeth Peak, the Minister of the Australian embassy and the economic counselor in China, Neal Carlin, Director of climate change and the environment department of British Embassy in China, Chi, jingdong, vice president of China Iron and Steel Association, Fiona Wild, vice-president of Climate change and sustainable development department of BHP Billiton made speeches at the opening session  respectively.

Sun Zen, the deputy director for Climit department of the Ministry of Ecological Environment proposed that the society should pay more attention to the potential and progress of CCUS cost in addition to focus on current CCUS technology costs.

Chi, jingdong, vice president of China Iron and Steel Association pointed out that low-carbon development is the core content of transformation and upgrading of China's steel industry in the face of pressure from carbon emission control.

In 2016, BHP Billiton started and invested a research project to evaluate three key factors for applying CCUS (carbon capture, storage and utilization) in iron and steel industry: policy, technology and commercial feasibility . The project was jointly participated by Peking University, University of Edinburgh, national center for climate change strategy and international cooperation (NCSC), North China Electric Power University and UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS center. It made the world’s first report on carbon capture ready in iron and steel plant.

In this symposium, University of Edinburgh, North China Electric Power University and UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS center released "report on design recommendation for CCS Ready in iron and steel plant in China" . (Captureready)
