ITRI wins R&D 100 Awards for Eco-Friendly Devices

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

The Industrial Technology Research Institute won two prizes at this year’s R&D 100 Awards, known as the “Oscars of Invention”, hosted by the U.S.-based R&D Magazine, ITRI.

The awards were for two innovative green technological breakthroughs: a carbon capture process in the high-efficiency calcium looping technology category and an in-line compact thermal analyzer in the imaging category.

According to ITRI, these two technologies not only highlight Taiwan’s world-class technological capabilities in green energy, but also demonstrate applications in the cement and LED industries, helping to reduce carbon and boost production efficiency. The institute has already transferred these technologies to Taiwan Cement Corp. and MPI Corp., respectively.

“The uses of carbon capture are limitless,” Taiwan Cement Chairman Leslie Koo said.

Koo’s firm was already working with ITRI on establishing an experimental carbon capture facility at Taiwan Cement’s plant in Hualien County. The HECLOT will be able to extract 1 ton of carbon dioxide per hour, which will then be used to cultivate microalgae and converted into biofuels.

The ITRI has won 18 R&D 100 Awards in the past seven years. (Taiwan Today)
