Tim Bertels discussed the lessons and experience in developing CCS projects at the 2nd Guangdong International CCUS conference.
Tim introduced the Shell‘s CCS demonstration project portfolio, including the CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) in Norway, testing post combustion capture technologies, the Quest project in Canada, demonstrating CCS for Oil Sands, the Peterhead project in the UK, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of CCS for Gas Power, and the world’s largest CCS project committed to date, Gorgon, in Australia, which will demonstrate storage in a deep saline formation.
Tim believed the needs for commercial CCS deployment include cost competitiveness of CCS, regulatory frameworks and demonstration support, learning from maturing, delivering and operating CCS, CO2 Transport & Storage infrastructure planning, continued innovation to drive down costs, public understanding of the need for CCS and its safety.
